On the afternoon of May 19, 2021, 21-year-old Rikyla D. Brown, a Black woman from Jackson, Mississippi, was shot dead inside her second-floor apartment at the Greenbriar Apartments on West McDowell Road after a domestic argument escalated into gunfire. Police were called about 2:30 p.m.; officers found Rikyla lying dead upstairs after neighbors reported hearing shots and screams.

Local reports describe her as a young mother and say at least one of her children was nearby during the shooting. Jackson police treated the incident as domestic-related rather than random violence and identified a suspect, 34-year-old Traverro McElroy (also spelled McElory), described as related to Rikyla. McElroy was charged in connection with the killing and later held at the Raymond Detention Center, but his subsequent escape and later death meant the case did not reach a public trial.

Did anyone in the Greenbriar Apartments or the surrounding neighborhood see or hear anything that afternoon that could shed more light on what happened?
