On the afternoon of Wednesday, March 3, 2021, Gulfport police forced entry into a home on 19th Street west of downtown after responding to a report of a shooting. Inside, officers found two people with apparent gunshot wounds. The victims were identified as 44-year-old Augusta Gussie Brooks and 51-year-old Gerald Smith; the Harrison County Coroner declared both dead at the scene.

The Gulfport Police Department opened an investigation and announced autopsies would be performed to determine official cause and manner of death.
