Jeffrey Gillespie was 17 when a dispute in Greenwood, Mississippi, turned deadly the evening of February 28, 2021. Police responded to reports of shots fired on the 200 block of Avenue H and found Gillespie with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to Greenwood Leflore Hospital and died in the early morning hours of March 2, 2021.
Investigators identified a suspect from evidence at the scene and witness statements. Later that day 24-year-old Clayton Lott of Greenwood was arrested and held at the Leflore County Jail; on March 4, 2021 he was charged with murder and bond was set at $100,000. Prosecutors said the shooting grew out of a personal dispute between Lott and Gillespie; Lott maintained he acted in self-defense while witnesses and forensic evidence were presented to contradict that claim. A jury found Clayton Lott guilty of second-degree murder and he was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Did anyone in Greenwood recognize Gillespie or have additional information about what led to the argument that night?
