On the morning of November 28, 2020, a call about a car crash in a residential Gulfport neighborhood led officers to the 1700 block of Westward Drive around 5:12 a.m. A vehicle that appeared to have been in an accident contained two men who had been shot to death. The Harrison County Deputy Coroner pronounced both victims dead at the scene from gunshot wounds.

The victims were identified as Charles E. Johnson Jr., 34, of Gulfport, and 22-year-old Rashaud Fairley, also of Gulfport. What began as an apparent crash was later treated as a double homicide and the Gulfport Police Department opened an investigation. The case remains unsolved and is listed as an open cold case with Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers; no suspects or arrests have been publicly announced.
