Robert Mouse Jackson, 26, was fatally shot on November 11, 2020, at Southview Apartments in Aberdeen, Mississippi. Authorities described the shooting as a freak accident that occurred while Jackson and his new roommate, 18-year-old Amiyah Verner, were handling a handgun they believed to be unloaded. Verner told investigators she thought the gun was safe because the magazine had been removed but did not realize a round remained in the chamber; the firearm discharged and Jackson was mortally wounded before paramedics arrived.
Verner, of Hamilton, was arrested and charged with manslaughter. Aberdeen Police Chief Henry Randle called it a sad situation for both families and emphasized the importance of gun safety. An autopsy was ordered as the investigation continued.
If anyone knew Jackson or was at Southview Apartments that night, any information could help clarify what happened.
