A family funeral in Greenwood, Mississippi, ended in a mass shooting on the night of October 24, 2020. Jonathan Pitts, 42, had traveled from Chicago with relatives to attend their grandmother’s funeral; late that night, gunfire at a post-funeral gathering on West Martin Luther King Drive left Jonathan and his sister Katrina Pitts, 41, dead and eight other people wounded. Witnesses reported an AR-15–style semiautomatic rifle and shell casings from that weapon were recovered at the scene. The shooter fled before police arrived, and investigators initially had few leads.
The investigation later produced an arrest: Tyrell Stigler was charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of Jonathan and Katrina Pitts and eight counts of aggravated assault for the injured victims, along with shooting into a dwelling, drug possession, and drug trafficking. Stigler’s case had advanced to trial proceedings beginning in January 2025, with charges that included capital murder. If anyone attended the gathering or has information about the events that night, please come forward with what was seen or heard.
