Laterrence Dewon McCarter, 23, was found dead after a shooting at the Brookville Garden Apartments on Highland Avenue in Starkville, Mississippi. Officers arrived about 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday, November 26, 2019, and the Oktibbeha County Coroner ruled his death a homicide; the body was sent to the state crime lab for autopsy.

A suspect, Aviante Jordan, then 16, was arrested and charged with murder in connection with the shooting. The case went to trial, but in May 2023 the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict after seven hours of deliberation and the judge declared a mistrial. The District Attorney must decide whether to retry the case.
