Late on May 30, 2019, 27-year-old Serena Madkins and 28-year-old Antonio Gipson were found shot to death inside an apartment at the Desoto Apartments on Sutton Place in Horn Lake, Mississippi. A baby in the unit was physically unharmed and was released to family members. A guest, Artavis Pimpton, told investigators he had been staying with Gipson and was watching television when someone knocked; the two victims were discovered about 9:30 p.m.

Investigators described the incident as a home invasion. A DeSoto County grand jury later indicted Marshon Cortez Diming, Jamoni Diming, and James Jakes on charges including conspiracy to commit armed robbery, capital murder of Madkins and Gipson, and the attempted murder of Pimpton and a minor. Marshon Cortez Diming was tried separately and convicted on all counts, receiving two life-without-parole sentences for the capital murder convictions plus additional prison terms for the other charges.
