A celebration of life at a Carrollton, Mississippi home on March 1, 2019 ended in multiple deaths when an intoxicated guest, identified as 39-year-old Michael Martin Barnhill, became aggressive after being refused his keys. Barnhill retrieved a .40 caliber handgun from his truck, returned to the gathering, and shot his wife, 27-year-old Marlee Jones Barnhill, in the chest. When 44-year-old Jim Harrell moved to intervene on Marlee’s behalf, Barnhill shot him as well. Brooks Hooker Harrell, 38, a registered nurse, was fatally shot while trying to aid her husband and their friend; she was critically wounded and died as paramedics prepared to airlift her to a hospital.
Two other guests escaped and hid with the Harrells’ 10-year-old son in a closet until help arrived. Deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office arrested Barnhill after witnesses identified him; he was charged with three counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder and held without bond. The case raises questions about how a party dispute escalated so quickly to lethal violence; anyone with information about that night is asked to come forward.
