Shortly after midnight on February 27, 2019, gunfire was reported at a duplex on 8th Avenue in Gulfport, Mississippi. Officers arriving about 12:15 AM found 18-year-old Brooklyn Alsobrook dead inside the residence from gunshot wounds and 31-year-old Maxwell Phillips fatally shot just outside the home. The two had been living together at the duplex.

Investigators treated the incident as a targeted double homicide. A neighbor heard the shots and reported seeing two people run from the scene; a four-hour canvass produced no immediate suspect identifications. Police later noted a connection between the victims: Phillips had prior arrests on human trafficking charges, and court records name Alsobrook, originally from Sweeny, Texas, as a victim in one of those cases. Authorities have not said whether that connection was a motive, and no arrests have been announced.

Anyone who heard or saw anything in the neighborhood that night, or who knew Brooklyn or where she lived and worked in the Gulfport area, is asked to come forward with information.
