In the early morning hours of November 27, 2018, 44-year-old Tomaka Jones was found dead inside his apartment at Plantation Place Apartments on Oak Street in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Police discovered Jones deceased after responding to a disturbance call shortly after 1 a.m.; he died of two gunshot wounds. A woman at the scene, identified as Jones’s girlfriend Marlena Owens, was transported for medical attention and was also the victim of armed robbery and aggravated assault.
Investigators say a group had planned an armed robbery at the residence. Court records identify Tykevious Durr and two others named Snell and Hinton as having gone to the apartment with intent to rob Jones; during the robbery Jones was shot and killed. Authorities initially took five people into custody for questioning and sought an orange passenger vehicle seen at the complex.
A Forrest County grand jury later indicted Tykevious Durr on conspiracy to commit armed robbery, capital murder in the death of Tomaka Jones, armed robbery of Marlena Owens, and aggravated assault of Marlena Owens. Durr was convicted on those counts following a June 2021 trial and sentenced to life without parole for the capital murder count, with additional consecutive terms for the other convictions. Rachel Jones was also arrested and charged with one count of conspiracy to commit armed robbery in connection with the incident.
Are there details about the orange passenger vehicle or anyone who saw activity at Plantation Place Apartments that night?
