On the night of September 26, 2018, in Greenville, Mississippi, 28-year-old Arby Moses was found gravely wounded in the 500 block of McAlister Street after a reported shooting. An officer at the scene said Moses, while dying, named Lil Norris as his attacker. He was taken to Delta Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead.

Witnesses told investigators they had seen Moses in the area, heard several gunshots after he left, and were then approached by a panicked man known as Black, later identified as Norris Smith, Jr., who allegedly confessed to shooting Moses. Another witness said a black sedan with out-of-state plates was nearby and that Smith exited the car, spotted Moses, and shot him. Forensic testing reportedly found gunshot residue on Smith’s hands, and he was arrested and charged in the homicide.

Smith, who was 23 at the time of his conviction, later pleaded guilty to Second Degree Murder and received a 35-year sentence with 20 years to serve and 15 years potentially suspended after five years of post-release supervision.
