Lewis Jackson III, a 25-year-old Black man, was killed in a drive-by shooting at the Holiday Apartments in Natchez, Mississippi, on September 22, 2018. The attack was one of several shootings affecting the city and occurred during a burst of gunfire that also prompted multiple aggravated assault counts in the case.

Within days investigators arrested three people. On September 24, 2018, Jamein Washington and Darryl K. Hurts Jr. were taken into custody on charges including murder, multiple counts of aggravated assault, drive-by shooting, shooting into a dwelling and a vehicle, and felony malicious mischief. Darnell D. Stevenson was initially arrested on weapons charges; murder and related counts were later added.

The prosecutions resulted in convictions. Jamein Washington received life plus 15 years for murder, aggravated assault and drive-by shooting. Darnell D. Stevenson was convicted by a jury and, on October 19, 2021, sentenced to 70 years. Authorities said the shootings were believed to be retaliation for a fatal shooting the previous year.

If anyone at Holiday Apartments that night or with information about the retaliation motive can help clarify what led to Lewis Jackson III’s death, please come forward.
