Talitha Mack, 31, was fatally shot on July 25, 2018, in the parking lot of the Merimac Apartments in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. A dispute over a shared romantic interest had been ongoing that day by various communications and culminated when Mack invited Orean Samuel to meet her in person at the complex on North 25th Avenue. Neither woman lived at the apartments.
Around 2:00 p.m., Samuel arrived and Mack came outside with other people. A brief physical altercation occurred, then Samuel produced a gun and shot Mack multiple times. The shooter fled on foot and Mack died at the scene before investigators arrived.
Hattiesburg Police identified 26-year-old Orean Samuel as the suspect; she was arrested and charged with murder and later pleaded guilty. Talitha’s father, Perry Mack Sr., filed a negligence suit against the Merimac Apartments, its management company, and the owner, alleging they failed to provide a reasonably safe environment; the court dismissed the lawsuit, finding the incident was not foreseeable and that Mack had contributed to the dangerous situation by arranging the confrontation at that location.
Did anyone in Hattiesburg witness the confrontation or have information about how it began earlier that day?
