On the night of April 16, 2018, 53-year-old Darrel Ware was visiting a friend at a Walnut Street residence in Canton, Mississippi, when a gunman entered the home and opened fire. Ware suffered fatal gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene; the homeowner was shot twice and taken to a nearby hospital.
Canton police said the homeowner apparently allowed the shooter inside, indicating no forced entry, but authorities did not say whether the homeowner knew the gunman, why the person had come to the house, or what prompted the shooting. Investigators also did not publicly identify a motive, release a detailed description of the shooter, or disclose what evidence was recovered.
In the days after the attack police were searching for the unidentified gunman; no publicly confirmed arrest or charges tied to Ware’s killing were reported. If anyone knew Darrel Ware, the homeowner, or has information about who entered that Walnut Street house on April 16, please come forward.
