Chris Davis was 24 and a working father from Como, Mississippi. After finishing a shift at Tier Rack in nearby Sardis, he went to an apartment complex in Como where the mother of his children lived. Late on Sunday, March 18, 2018, gunfire erupted at the complex around 11 p.m. and Davis was found dead inside that apartment.
The chaotic scene drew as many as 250 people into the parking lots and walkways, overwhelming the small Como Police Department. Panola County sheriff’s deputies and the Mississippi Highway Patrol assisted; deputies detained at least one man for questioning the next day but by the end of the week no one was being held in the county jail in connection with the death and no arrests had been announced. Memorials later emphasized Davis’s role as a father and a worker.
