On the evening of January 25, 2018, 61-year-old shipyard worker Leland Sumrall was shot while riding his motorcycle home from Ingalls Ship Building in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and later died from his injuries. The shooting followed an earlier confrontation at a bar that evening in which 29-year-old Luis Soto Jr. of Gautier argued with two active-duty service members. Soto pursued the service members as they left, fired at their vehicle and then drove the wrong way on U.S. 90 while fleeing.
During that flight Soto encountered Sumrall, who was not involved in the prior dispute; Soto fired multiple shots at Sumrall, causing him to crash. Sumrall was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. Law enforcement treated the case as road rage, arrested Soto and charged him with second-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault and one count of shooting into a motor vehicle. In February 2020 Soto pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
Did anyone in Pascagoula or Gautier see the vehicle or the wrong-way driver on U.S. 90 that night?
