Walter Keon Mobley was a 29-year-old Black man from Leland, Mississippi, and a young father who was shot to death around 10 p.m. on January 19, 2018. Officers found him at the West Bend Apartments; his death was recorded as the city’s first homicide of that year and deeply affected his family and the small Delta community. Family and friends later said they believed he had been killed in a case of mistaken identity rather than as the intended target.

Investigators arrested a local man named Hakeem Wilson on March 19, 2018, in nearby Greenville; he was taken into custody without incident and charged in connection with the January shooting. Court filings show Wilson was held on one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder, and a later state grand jury returned a three-count indictment including first-degree murder with a firearm enhancement, attempted murder with a firearm enhancement, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, all tied to the January 19, 2018 offense date.

Walters Mobley’s death left his child and loved ones grieving; the Leland Police asked residents to support and pray for the family as they sought justice. If anyone knew Walter or has information about that night at West Bend Apartments, please share what you remember.
