A family gathering in Sardis, Mississippi, on Thanksgiving night turned deadly. Brian Keith Kimmons, 36, was shot and killed in his home on the evening of November 23, 2017. Two young children, both under the age of seven, were present when the shooting occurred.
The dispute reportedly began over a picture and escalated into a heated argument between Kimmons and his brother-in-law, 37-year-old Melvin Salter Jr. Witnesses said Salter left the house after the first confrontation but returned shortly afterward; the renewed argument ended with gunfire. Sardis police were called at 11:22 p.m.; emergency responders could not revive Kimmons and he was pronounced dead.
An investigator with the Panola County Sheriff’s Department located Salter in the early hours the next morning and he was taken into custody without incident. Salter was charged with murder, released on a $100,000 bond after a preliminary hearing, and the case was bound over for grand jury action. Few other details have been reported.
If anyone has information about the events that night or knew Brian, please share what you know.
