On October 8, 2017, a driveway dispute in Kosciusko, Mississippi, left 29-year-old Orlando DeAndrae Malone dead. Malone, an unarmed Black man, was at his home on County Road 1140 when he was shot once in the neck at about 3:54 p.m.; the wound was instantly fatal. Witnesses later said a disagreement between Malone and 28-year-old Kendrick Edwards escalated, Edwards pulled a gun, and a struggle preceded the shot.

Edwards fled the scene but surrendered that evening to the Attala County Sheriff’s Department. At a November 2017 preliminary hearing Edwards said God had instructed him to commit the killing, prompting a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation; he was ultimately found competent to stand trial. In September 2019 Edwards accepted a plea to reduced second-degree murder and was sentenced to 20 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
