Shelia May Burage was 46 and lived with her husband on East Lincoln Road in Bogue Chitto, Mississippi. On the night of May 27, 2017, a domestic dispute involving an acquaintance of the family escalated into a multi-location shooting spree across Lincoln County that ended at the Burage home.

When the gunman forced entry, Shelia was on the telephone; the person on the line heard a door kicked in and gunfire before the call cut off. Her husband, Ferral Burage, engaged the attacker and wounded him but was then fatally shot. The assailant went to the bathroom where Shelia had hidden and shot her, killing her. Responding officers found the suspect, Willie Cory Godbolt, nearby with a gunshot wound to his arm; he surrendered and reportedly confessed at the scene.
