Ronnie Petty, 28, was killed in a shootout in Como, Mississippi, on January 20, 2017. The violence began after a dispute at a local store and escalated when two groups confronted one another on Smart Road in the northeastern corner of Panola County. Investigators recovered more than 60 shell casings from weapons that included 9mm handguns and high-powered rifles.

Petty was transported to Merit Health in Batesville and pronounced dead on arrival. Four other men suffered gunshot wounds in the same exchange. At the scene, officers found at least one vehicle riddled with bullets and a nearby mobile home struck by stray rounds; the mobile home’s occupants were not injured. The Panola County Sheriff’s Department collected evidence and conducted interviews, and in the weeks after the shooting no charges had been filed and no arrests or suspects were publicly identified.
