Omario Meesha Caldwell was 41 when her body was found on January 4, 2017, on Heindl Road near Old Yazoo City Road in Canton, Mississippi. A Madison County Sheriff’s Office investigation determined she had been shot to death and ruled the case a homicide. Caldwell, a Black transgender woman known as Mesha, worked as a hair and makeup artist and was remembered by friends and family for her vibrant personality and kindness.

Authorities did not name any suspects or announce a motive in the initial investigation, and by late 2017 there had been no arrests or identified suspects.
