On New Year’s Day 2017, 25-year-old Jeffrey Pope of Meridian, Mississippi, was fatally shot in the early morning hours. His body was found before 5 a.m. at the intersection of 16th Street and 16th Avenue; investigators recovered .40-caliber shell casings nearby and the Lauderdale County Coroner ruled the cause of death gunshot wounds.
Police identified Aundre Rashaun Tubbs as a suspect and issued a warrant in late February 2017. Tubbs turned himself in on February 27 and was charged with Pope’s murder. At a March 2 preliminary hearing, Meridian City Court Judge Robbie Jones ruled the evidence insufficient to hold Tubbs on bond pending a grand jury decision. The city’s case had included conflicting statements about Tubbs’s clothing that night and testimony from associates that he owned a .40-caliber pistol.
It is not clear whether the matter was ever presented to a grand jury, whether Tubbs remained a suspect, or whether anyone was ultimately charged in Pope’s killing. Does anyone have information about the investigation or what happened next?
