On November 19, 2016, Tyshekia Hughes, 33, was shot and killed outside her trailer on family land near Magnolia, Mississippi, during a family gathering meant to celebrate her fifteen-year-old daughter’s birthday and school success. A separate disturbance at a nearby trailer prompted deputies to respond; Hughes moved toward that trailer, became involved in an argument, and then began walking back toward her own trailer. Outside her trailer she encountered her husband, Aundra Johnson, and witnesses say a brief argument over a jacket escalated. Johnson drew a handgun and fired a single shot that struck Hughes in the head.

Officers nearby found her mortally wounded; witnesses reported Johnson fleeing, discarding a 9 mm pistol, and then being detained after a short chase. He was arrested that night and later indicted for first-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm. At trial in August 2018 a jury convicted him of first-degree murder and firearm possession; the judge imposed life plus ten years.

The Mississippi Court of Appeals affirmed the convictions and sentences on May 19, 2020.
