On the evening of May 30, 2016, a dispute at a gas station on U.S. 49 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, escalated and Madison Sims, 48, was shot. He was privately transported to a local hospital but succumbed to the gunshot wound and was taken off life support on June 2, 2016. Sims was a Black/African American resident of Hattiesburg.

Investigators identified 24-year-old Andre Antonio-Rapheal Baker as a suspect; he surrendered to the Forrest County Sheriff’s Department on June 7, 2016, and was charged with first-degree murder. Baker was on bond for an unrelated residential burglary at the time, and that bond was revoked after the murder charge.

When the case went to trial in early 2019, prosecutors argued the shooting was premeditated; the defense conceded Baker shot Sims but sought a lesser charge. A jury found Andre Antonio-Rapheal Baker guilty of first-degree murder and the judge sentenced him to life in prison. Does anyone have additional information about the circumstances at the gas station or witnesses to the argument?
