The shooting occurred just after 9:00 p.m. on April 26, 2016, outside a residence on Cemetery Street following a physical altercation between Simmons and another man. A single gunshot struck Simmons in the chest; he was taken to Magnolia Regional Health Center and later died of his injuries. An autopsy was scheduled in Jackson.
The man involved in the fight turned himself in to the Corinth Police Department and was identified as 21-year-old Darius Gaines of Bunch Street. Gaines was arrested and charged with manslaughter; bond was set at $100,000 and the matter was referred to a grand jury. Funeral services for Simmons were held at the Lighthouse, and he was buried at Rienzi Cemetery.
