On the evening of March 24, 2016, 37-year-old Teletha Burks was shot and killed at a Jubilee gas station on Highway 80 in Jackson, Mississippi. Burks, a Black woman, was sitting in the driver’s seat of her small SUV near the pumps when an altercation with a man escalated and the man fired multiple shots through the driver’s side window. Emergency crews arrived about 7:06 PM; she was treated by AMR paramedics, taken to Merit Health Hospital, and pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Witnesses and surveillance footage captured the encounter. The assailant, described as wearing jeans, red shoes, and a brown hooded jacket, fled in a black Dodge Avenger. Officers later located the vehicle and detained Kendrick Bell in connection with the shooting. Bell was charged with murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm; the indictment and later courtroom developments reduced and resolved those charges.
Does anyone have information about Teletha’s last evening at the gas station or recall seeing the black Dodge Avenger that night?
