On February 27, 2016, Richard Anthony Doby, a 23-year-old Black man, was shot and killed on Robindale Road in the Crown Hill subdivision of Gulfport, Mississippi. A verbal argument and a physical fight involving Doby and his cousin had occurred earlier that evening at the home of Shaquil Sands’ brother. Testimony says the shooting began after the initial fight ended, when 21-year-old Shaquil Sands fired several shots as Doby and his cousin tried to flee.

Doby was struck in the chest by a bullet that damaged multiple vital organs and died at the scene after a 9:09 p.m. call brought law enforcement to the area. His cousin was hit by four bullets, two entering his back and leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Sands was arrested, charged with murder and aggravated assault, and held on a $1.5 million bond. The victim’s funeral was held March 5, 2016.
