On the morning of January 13, 2016, Troy E. Weaver, a 51-year-old Black man who lived in an apartment on West Commerce Street in Aberdeen, Mississippi, was shot dead inside his home. He had spent part of the morning with one of his daughters and his granddaughter; his daughter Sierra remembers a casual goodbye before running an errand and later seeing police and an ambulance outside his building.
Witnesses told reporters that a man later identified by police as Charles Thompson entered Weaver’s apartment around 10:30 a.m. and opened fire, striking two men. Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures in front of the building, but the ambulance crew eventually stopped efforts for Weaver, who was pronounced dead at home that day. The landlord described Weaver as a long-time, model tenant; obituaries list a wife, Priscilla, several children, siblings, and grandchildren among his survivors.
Did anyone in the Aberdeen area know Troy or see something that could help explain what led to that daytime shooting?
