Jacob Jake Williams Jr. was 17 when he was shot and killed on a street in Leland, Mississippi, on the evening of July 1, 2015. A rising senior and standout on Leland High School’s football and baseball teams, he was pronounced dead at the scene by the Washington County Coroner from a gunshot wound to his upper left chest. His father, Jake Williams Sr., was the police chief of nearby Hollandale and a candidate for Washington County sheriff at the time.
The investigation identified 29-year-old Antonio Dewey as the shooter. Dewey initially said the firearm discharged accidentally while he was handling it. In November 2015 a Washington County grand jury indicted Dewey on a manslaughter charge; in August 2016 he pleaded guilty and received a 20-year sentence from the Mississippi Department of Corrections, with 15 years to serve and five years suspended on probation. The District Attorney said the resolution was intended to help the family find some measure of closure.
If anyone knew Jake, was with him that evening, or has information about the events leading up to the shooting, please come forward.
