On the evening of May 9, 2015, a traffic stop in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, turned deadly when shots were fired, killing two Hattiesburg Police Department officers. One of the victims was 34-year-old Benjamin Joseph Deen, a K-9 officer who had been named the department’s Officer of the Year in 2012. He was a husband and father of two children. Deen and his colleague, Liquori Tate, were critically wounded at the scene, taken to a hospital, and later died of their injuries — the department’s first line-of-duty deaths in over three decades.

A manhunt followed and multiple arrests were made. The primary suspect, 29-year-old Marvin Banks, was charged with two counts of capital murder, grand theft auto, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. His girlfriend, 22-year-old Joanie Calloway, was initially charged with capital murder. Marvin’s brother, 26-year-old Curtis Banks, was charged with two counts of accessory after the fact to capital murder; other people were later charged with accessory and obstruction-related offenses.

What details about the stop, the vehicle involved, or the timeline that night might help explain how the confrontation escalated to fatal gunfire?
