On the evening of May 9, 2015, 25-year-old Hattiesburg Police Department officer Liquori Terja Tate was killed during a traffic stop that escalated into gunfire. Officer Tate had graduated from the police academy in 2014 and had been with the department for just under a year. Officer Benjamin Deen, who had initiated the stop on a gold Cadillac Escalade, was also shot; both officers were taken to a local hospital and died of their wounds, marking the first line-of-duty deaths for the department in over three decades.
Authorities say the suspects fled, one of them stealing a police cruiser and abandoning it a few blocks away. An intensive manhunt led to multiple arrests: brothers Marvin Banks and Curtis Banks, Joanie Calloway, and Cornelius Clark. Marvin Banks and Joanie Calloway were charged with two counts of capital murder, Curtis Banks with accessory after the fact to capital murder, and Cornelius Clark with obstruction of justice. Marvin Banks, accused of firing the fatal shots, was found dead in his jail cell in December 2015.
Anyone who knew Officer Tate, was in Hattiesburg that night, or has information about the shooting is asked to share what they remember.
