In the spring of 2015, gunfire in a Greenville, Mississippi neighborhood left 25-year-old Kenneth Howard dead. Howard was found on April 22, 2015, in the 300 block of Sunflower Lane with four gunshot wounds. Officers from the Greenville Police Department’s Special Operations Unit were in the area executing a search warrant when they heard the shots and quickly reached the scene.

Within minutes investigators focused on a nearby residence and located 24-year-old Marquel Mangum. Officers recovered the firearm used in the shooting inside that home. Mangum was charged with first-degree murder, later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder before Circuit Court Judge Richard Smith, and received a 40-year sentence in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, with 30 years to be served without early release or parole and ten years of probation following release.
