On March 13, 2015, 9-year-old Jamiyah Sims and her father, 31-year-old Jermaine Sims, were fatally shot during an attack inside their Brookhaven, Mississippi, home. The shootings began around 12:20 a.m. and involved a man who had been living with the family. Officers who responded after a call about an injured woman found Jamiyah’s mother, Victoria Sims, with a gunshot wound to the chest, a 14-year-old daughter shot in the chest and arm, and a 6-year-old son with a gunshot wound to the head. Jermaine and Jamiyah were located inside the South First Street residence and were taken to a Jackson hospital, where both died later that morning.
Police arrested 32-year-old Jimmy Lyons at the scene. Authorities charged him with two counts of murder for the deaths of Jamiyah and Jermaine and three counts of aggravated assault for the injuries to Victoria and the two children. Lyons was being held at the Lincoln County jail awaiting a grand jury hearing when he was found unresponsive in his cell on May 30, 2015 and later pronounced dead; no obvious cause of death or signs of trauma were reported and an autopsy was ordered.
Does anyone have information about the family’s life in Brookhaven or recollections from that night that could shed more light on what happened?
