The shooting occurred while Devin and his twin brother were playing at a friend’s house. The Walthall County Coroner, Shannon Hartzog, ruled the death accidental.

Local authorities concluded there was no foul play, no arrests were made, and no suspects were named; the case was closed as an accidental shooting. Funeral services were held December 31, 2014, at Tylertown Baptist Church, and Devin was buried in Sims Cemetery.
