A family dispute over a child’s bicycle in Gulfport, Mississippi, ended in gunfire on September 24, 2014, when 40-year-old Willie Lee Taylor was shot in the abdomen at a residence near Roberts Avenue and 23rd Street. Gulfport police found him and he was taken to Memorial Hospital at Gulfport, where he was pronounced dead.
The conflict began the day before when Willie Taylor hid the bicycle to keep the child from riding it in the street, prompting an argument with his nephew’s sister and niece. The nephew, Dante O’Bryan Taylor, sent threatening texts to his uncle, then returned the next day armed. Witnesses said a confrontation occurred when Willie Taylor raised his fists and Dante Taylor produced a handgun and shot him. After the shooting Dante Taylor fled, discarded the gun and deleted the texts.
A jury convicted Dante O’Bryan Taylor, then 29, of first-degree murder after about an hour of deliberation. The judge, citing prior felony convictions, sentenced him as a habitual offender to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Does anyone have additional details about the moments leading up to the confrontation or the witnesses who testified?
