On the evening of September 13, 2014, 25-year-old Tony Jones, also known as Fat Cat, was shot on Brewer Drive in Cleveland, Mississippi, and died of multiple gunshot wounds. Earlier that day Jones and another man, Lamarcus Wallace, had argued; an officer separated them after a search of Jones turned up no weapon. As Wallace left, an officer recalled him saying It isn't over in a tone described as a promise of future revenge.

Around 9:15 p.m. the same night police responded to a shooting and found Jones in a driveway; he died shortly thereafter. Another witness placed Wallace at the scene hiding behind a tree before shots were heard.

Wallace was arrested and charged with murder, tried, and convicted; he was sentenced to life in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, and his conviction was upheld on appeal.
