Investigator Michael John Walter, 37, was shot and killed on May 1, 2012, while serving a search warrant in Pearl, Mississippi. Walter, a former professional baseball player who had served with the Pearl Police Department for three years, was part of a five-officer team executing a warrant at an apartment complex on Colony Park Drive in a case involving sexual battery of a minor and possession of child pornography.

Officers found the subject of the warrant hiding in a bathtub as they were clearing the apartment. When they tried to take him into custody he resisted; a taser was deployed and the suspect then opened fire with a handgun. Walter was struck in the face during the exchange. Two other officers were also wounded; one of those officers returned fire and killed the suspect at the scene. All three injured officers were taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and Walter died about 40 minutes after arriving.

Walter is survived by his wife, daughter, and parents. Does anyone have additional details about the investigation or the officers involved that can add context to this case?
