Sergeant Steven Dewain Morgan, 40, was killed while on duty in Long Beach, Mississippi, on May 6, 1998. He and other officers were responding to a domestic disturbance when a suspect opened fire with an AR-15 after picking it up upon hearing approaching sirens. The suspect had been wearing fatigues and a bulletproof vest and had been holding a handgun before grabbing the rifle.

Detective James Franklin Northcutt, 54, was also fatally wounded in the exchange; a third officer was injured. An off-duty officer from another department who was nearby shot and killed the suspect at the scene, so no arrests were made in connection with the deaths. Sergeant Morgan had served seven years with the Long Beach Police Department and was survived by his wife, three sons, and a daughter.

Did anyone in the Long Beach area at the time have information about the disturbance or the suspect’s movements before officers arrived?
