Casey Ryan Harmon, 20, was killed while on duty at the Lee County Juvenile Detention Center in Tupelo, Mississippi. He had been a detention officer for three months when, as he prepared to release a 16-year-old in custody for shoplifting, the youth produced a small handgun concealed in his shoe and fired a single, fatal shot to the back of Harmon’s head.
After the shooting the assailant took Harmon’s keys, released another juvenile, and the two fled the facility. They were arrested later that night near Memphis and taken into custody. Harmon is survived by his wife, his parents, and two brothers, one of whom later served as Chief of Police in Houston, Mississippi.
Was anyone in the area that day aware of unusual activity at the detention center or of the two juveniles after they left the facility?
