A routine traffic stop on Main Street in Columbia, Mississippi, ended in a deadly gunfight that killed two patrolmen. Patrolman Wayne Grant Henebry, a five-year veteran of the Columbia Police Department, responded to a call for backup after Patrolman Billy Patterson stopped a man in front of the Marion County Courthouse. The stopped man reportedly had a violent history and had allegedly threatened to kill the next officer he encountered. During the exchange of gunfire that followed, both Henebry and Patterson were fatally shot.
After fleeing the scene, the suspect reportedly intended to harm his wife but was confronted at her residence by his son. The son shot and killed the suspect while acting to defend his mother. Henebry is survived by his wife, son, daughter, mother, and brothers. Does anyone have additional information about Henebry’s service or the events that night?
