Harold Lane Caldwell was 25 when he was killed on the evening of September 14, 1979, in Corinth, Mississippi. A White/Caucasian agent with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics who had served about two and a half years, Caldwell was married with two sons and was called to back up local officers who were investigating an apparent kidnapping. The suspect in that incident, a 75-year-old man, began to draw a .25 caliber handgun during the confrontation. Caldwell and his partner attempted to disarm him; the suspect fired, and Caldwell was fatally wounded.
The elderly suspect was taken into custody and charged with capital murder. His trial opened, but on May 21, 1980 he fell ill in the courtroom, was hospitalized, and a mistrial was declared. The man’s health continued to decline and he died in 1985, before facing a new trial or a conviction. No conviction was obtained for Agent Caldwell’s killing.
Did anyone in Corinth at the time know Agent Caldwell or have information about the events of September 14, 1979?
