On the night of December 30, 2020, 59-year-old Ricky H. Bailey was shot to death inside his Rapson Road residence in Verona Township, Michigan. Shortly before midnight two masked intruders wearing black ski masks, black leather coats, black gloves and black pants forced their way into the home armed with handguns. Bailey was found with two gunshot wounds after his 11- and 20-year-old sons called 911; the sons were physically unharmed. One son hid while the youngest was forced out of a bathroom and made to lie on the floor as the attackers demanded money and assaulted Bailey.

Investigators from the Huron County Sheriff’s Office, the Bad Axe Police Department and the Michigan State Police later learned a handgun seized by the Chicago Police Department in 2023 matched the ballistics from Bailey’s killing. The gun had originally been purchased in Huron County and the first owner said the weapon had been sold, but could not identify the buyer. The investigation stalled and no arrests had been announced as of late 2024; family and friends have posted a $9,500 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
