On the morning of June 26, 1998, 38-year-old Debra Sue Murray was ambushed and fatally shot on the front lawn of her Chandler, Arizona, home as she left at about 4:30 AM for her job as a manager at a local Jack in the Box. Her 12-year-old son and the family’s live-in nanny were asleep inside and did not witness the shooting; paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.
Investigators initially found signs of forced entry in the garage and treated the scene as a possible interrupted burglary, but detectives later concluded the scene had been staged and that Murray was the intended target. Detectives said the killer likely knew her schedule. Her husband, Jack Murray, was considered an investigative lead after a foot impression in the yard prompted suspicion, but the evidence was ruled inconclusive; authorities reported he was cooperative and there were no records of domestic violence calls to the home. No one was ever charged, the case went cold, and a family-offered reward produced no arrests.
Did anyone in Chandler at the time see Debra leaving for work in the early morning or notice anyone near her house around 4:30 AM?
