Jonathan Mason Kaufman was a three-year-old boy who died on June 28, 2015, in Franklin, Michigan, after an accidental, fatal shooting at home. According to investigators, Jonathan was briefly unattended inside the house while his father and older brother were outside. He found a loaded .40-caliber handgun in a closet and a single, accidental shot inflicted a mortal head wound. Michigan State Police responded and the case was investigated; statements were taken from his parents, Derick and Michelle Kaufman, and other family members, and a report was forwarded to the county prosecutor’s office. The investigation concluded the shooting was accidental; no arrests were made and no suspects were named.
Jonathan’s obituary described him as a loving child who enjoyed cartoons, riding his bicycle, and playing with the family pets. The family continues to grieve a young life cut short by a preventable tragedy. Does anyone have information about safe storage practices or local resources that could help other families avoid a similar loss?
