Kenneth J. Labita was a 76-year-old widower and long-time Plymouth Township resident who was found dead in his living room on October 27, 2014. Neighbors raised the alarm after noticing his dog left outside for days and an open garage door — unusual for the retired Dunn Steel employee who had lived on Gilbert Avenue for about 40 years. He had been preparing to move out of state and was selling belongings, including firearms.

Officers determined Labita died of a gunshot wound to the back of his head and the death was ruled a homicide. Investigators say two acquaintances, 22-year-old Andrew J. Nutt and 19-year-old Miriah Pisarski, went to Labita’s home on October 24 under the pretense of buying guns and other items. Prosecutors alleged Nutt shot Labita and the pair stole firearms and cash; nearly $4,000 taken from Labita was found at Nutt’s residence but the firearms were not recovered.

Nutt later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and a firearms charge and received 27 to 60 years. Pisarski pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact and larceny of firearms and was sentenced to two to five years. Did anyone in Plymouth Township recognize the couple or recall seeing them near Gilbert Avenue in October 2014?
