On the evening of December 10, 1998, Fernando Orozco was working behind the counter at LaCorona Liquor Store, 1614 South Michigan Street in South Bend, Indiana, when a suspect entered and opened fire with a handgun. Orozco, a Hispanic male, was struck multiple times and died from his wounds despite efforts to save him. The investigation remains open and no arrests have been announced.
A week before the shooting, Orozco had been the victim of an armed robbery at the same business and shot and killed the robber in self-defense. Authorities have treated that prior incident as a possible motive or connection to the December 10 killing, but no definitive link has been established.
If anyone has information about the shooting at LaCorona Liquor Store or about threats against Fernando Orozco in late 1998, please contact the South Bend Police Department.
