In the late morning of November 16, 2022, a dispute over a dog in the Birches Apartments parking lot on Fries Mill Road in Washington Township, New Jersey, ended with Victor Marrero Jr., 39, shot and killed. Officers arrived at about 10:26 a.m. after reports of gunshots and found Marrero in the parking lot with gunshot wounds. An autopsy determined his death was a homicide by shooting.
Witnesses say an argument between Marrero and 26-year-old apartment resident Zachary A. Lahneman escalated; the altercation reportedly turned physical while Marrero was retreating, and Lahneman allegedly fired two shots. Responding officers detained Lahneman near the scene after a witness identified him as the shooter, recovered a gun inside his apartment, and charged him with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was lodged in the Salem County Correctional Facility and ordered to remain jailed pending trial.
If anyone witnessed the confrontation or has information about what led to the shooting, please come forward.
