On the afternoon of March 11, 2022, Eric C. Williams, a 50-year-old Black man, was found with fatal gunshot wounds at the intersection of Johnston Avenue and Front Street in Plainfield, New Jersey. Police were on the scene shortly before 4:00 p.m.; Williams was pronounced dead at the scene after first responders arrived.

Authorities arrested a 32-year-old Plainfield resident, Haneef Welch, later that same evening. Welch was charged with first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and was held in the Union County Jail pending legal proceedings.
